HELENA GOÑI

PHOTOGRAPHER IN RESIDENCE, MARCH 2026

Helena Goñi is an artist and photo book enthusiast from the Basque Country (Spain), currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Her interest in photography began as a child, seeing her mom documenting family life during a year abroad in Canada, an experience that instilled in her an early fascination with how images shape and capture everyday life This original encounter, many years ago, continues to inform her analog-based, process-driven practice today.

Growing up in the Basque Country without having Basque as her mother tongue, together with her early exposure to different cultures, created a sense of uprootedness that persists and transpires her artistic practice, even through [MOU1] a certain resistance to sticking to a single (visual) language. Working primarily with photography, she moves fluidly between documentary and experimental approaches, using the camera as both a tool for observation and a site for material and conceptual inquiry.

She studied Fine Art at the University of the Basque Country (Bilbao, Spain) and holds an MFA in Photography from Central Saint Martins, London. In 2021, she relocated to New York after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Creative Practices program at the International Center of Photography. Goñi has been part of the Solomon R Guggenheim Basque Artist Program cohort and has participated in international exhibitions, most recently at Dashwood Projects (NY) presenting her project Softbound (September 2025) and artist residencies across Europe, the United States, and Japan.
