SEBASTIAN FERRUZO

PHOTOGRAPHER IN RESIDENCE, APRIL 2025

Sebastian Ferruzo is a self-taught photographer currently based in Jersey City, NJ. He focuses on making longterm photobook projects in the “lyric documentary” tradition. His projects combine portraits, landscapes, andstill lives, to communicate his unique perspective.

Sebastian was born in Peru in 1996, and immigrated to the US in his early childhood. After barely graduating high school, he spent his final teenage years running away from the world that he grew up in. He traveled in cheap cars, trains, and greyhound busses, and began to engage with people that lived on the edges of society. They filled him with optimism as they allowed him a glimpse into an alternate way to live.

When Sebastian started to become intellectually engaged in his late teens, one of his early inspirations was the book “A People's History of the United States” by Howard Zinn. It was recommended to him by a man in a library who had a large anarchy tattoo that covered the top of his left hand. He lived in a bus in the California desert. He, and this book, taught Sebastian that in order to understand our society and our place in the world, we have to engage with the people who are actually affected by the issues of our time, and not just take the news and history books as gospel.
