Our fourth iteration of the FREE FILM project explored the theme “ONE SQUARE MILE” over 6 distinct New York City neighborhoods. Curated from over 18,000 images submitted by 500+ local photographers, the book shares intimate and honest imagery which forever freezes these neighborhoods in time.
Sine June of 2022 our Airstream mobile darkroom has travelled to Red Hook, the Lower East Side, Sunset Park, the South Bronx, Harlem, and East Williamsburg to activate the local community with FREE FILM and also to serve as a darkroom facility for our Photographers in Residence. Each Photographer in Residence is provided a $2,500 artist stipend in addition to being given 24/7 access to the Airstream darkroom and film and developing materials. In addition to using the Airstream as a resource for their personal practices each Photographer in Residence is required to develop, organize and run free public programs focused in analog photographer. Over the course of FREE FILM : NYC these programs have served over 350 people.
