Teaching Photographer

Position Overview

WORTHLESSSTUDIOS is pleased to announce a partnership with Socrates Sculpture Park starting this December, 2024. The Airstream Darkroom (a professional darkroom housed in a mobile trailer) will take up residence on the grounds of the Park, and WORTHLESSSTUDIOS will partner with a local photographer to hold youth workshops for the Socrateens After-School Program. Students will learn how to use an SLR film camera, process black and white film, and print using professional equipment provided by WORTHLESSSTUDIOS. 

This is an onsite position at Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, Queens, requiring in-person attendance for every session. This role is a short-term, freelance position.

Schedule

5 Sessions, Wednesdays 3PM - 6PM.

  • 2024: 12/4, 12/11 

  • 2025: 1/15, 1/22, 1/29

  • 1-2 additional remote hours/week for program development and class preparation

Responsibilities

  • Development of 5 week curriculum with Socrateens Program Staff

  • Facilitation of 5 classes for 8-12 students

  • Management of darkroom equipment and supplies

  • Collaboration with staff to select images for a display of student works at end of program

  • Weekly reporting to WORTHLESSSTUDIOS 

Qualifications

  • Strong film photography practice and background

  • Experience teaching photography and darkroom techniques 

  • Ability to develop curriculum that meets goals of Socrateens and WORTHLESSSTUDIOS

  • Knowledge of darkroom safety practices

  • Ability to troubleshoot darkroom equipment and identify solutions to technical issues

  • Preference: Connection to or relationship with Astoria, Queens

Compensation and Benefits

Freelance. Rate: $30-45/hr commensurate to experience. Access to the Airstream Darkroom outside of instruction hours will be permitted for personal photographic work to the Analog Photography Instructor on a weekly schedule.
